EURES speaks your language

An international tourism company seeking Russian speaking employees for several of its resorts found 20 in Estonia with the help of EURES.

TMC Tourist Services is based in Demark, but has customers in Britain, Canada and Russia. It is the latter country that poses a difficulty when communicating with potential guests. Russian tourists are eager to take advantage of TMC’s package holidays to Greece and Cyprus, but their Danish employees rarely have the language skills to communicate with them.

“Many Russian tourists are unable to speak English, so we will look abroad for workers able to meet their needs,” says Thomas Wengler of TMC, which is a small holiday company with a staff that expands to 50-60 workers during the holiday season.

That led them to Estonia, where Russian is the second most widely spoken language. “We had been cooperating with EURES Sweden before and they put us in contact with EURES Estonia. We have now been working with them for five years and they are incredible.”

The local EURES network pulled out all the stops in finding Russian speakers suited to TMC’s open positions: receptionists, hotel entertainers, and fitness instructors. Last season, for example, they began advertising in November 2012, and by March 2013 TMC had recruited almost 20 workers in Estonia.
“Not only did they advertise our vacancies in good time ahead of the holiday season, they even engaged private companies to search for the right candidates,” adds Thomas. “They are extremely organised.”

With the company set for the coming holiday season in Greece and Cyprus, Thomas believes that TMC’s working relationship with EURES Estonia will continue. As the market catering for Russian holidaymakers expands rapidly, it is very hard for some travel companies to keep up. “It would be very difficult for smaller companies to survive without services like EURES to help,” he concludes.
