Spain’s Canary Islands, one of the most touristic destinations in Europe, has suffered a dramatic increase in unemployment following the economic crisis. Unemployment is almost 30 % – the highest level in years.

Tirol and Salzburg in Austria are also popular tourist destinations but the tourism there is more seasonal. Additional hotel staff are needed to cover the three or four months when tourists flock to the region for winter sports. Every year, EURES Austria looks for experienced hotel staff who are able to speak a good level of German.

“We have many unemployed people who fit the criteria here in the Canary Islands,” said Marisa Carmona, a EURES adviser in the Canary Islands.

Marisa Carmona continues: “An Austrian EURES adviser attended our Job Days event back in February 2010. We made the link and decided to launch this interesting project that benefits both countries”.

By September 2010, EURES in the Canary Islands was already promoting Austrian vacancies among local employment offices, pre-selected a number of potential candidates based on their language skills and professional experience.

In November, two Austrian EURES advisers, travelled to the Canary Islands to conduct interviews. The advisers met around 80 candidates in the two main cities in the Canaries.

Some 34 people were selected and finally 22 eventually moved to Austria between December 2010 and January 2011. They came from the sun to the snow to work for hotels in the Tirol and Salzburg.

“Candidates were very excited by the experience and employers also seemed very happy. So we’re hoping to repeat the project next season,” stated Marisa Carmona.
