EURES Advisers in Spain have teamed up with their colleagues in Austria to promote seasonal jobs in Austria, pre-selecting and advising potential candidates. It’s thanks to this proactive approach that Spanish hotel staff who speak a good level of German can find work in Austrian hotels at the height of the winter ski season.

Juan Pedro Garcia de Dios is one such candidate. Having lived in Germany for seven years when he was younger his German language skills were already advanced. So he thought he would put his skills to good use. “There is currently not enough work in Tenerife and as I speak German I wanted to go to a German-speaking country. There seemed to be a lot of work in Austria, so it seemed the right decision to make,” he explains.

Once his mind was made up he went to the public employment service (PES) in Tenerife where he found out about about EURES. “My local EURES Adviser advised me to write a letter to the Austrian PES, outlining my motivation for working in the country. Then after only a week, EURES called me to say they had found me a job.”

After interviews in Tenerife with EURES Advisers from Austria and on the telephone with the Austrian employer, Juan Pedro was on his way to work as a waiter for four and half months in Vorarlberg to cover the peak season when tourists flock to the region for winter sports. But before leaving home his local EURES Adviser made sure he was adequately prepared, ensuring the move ran smoothly. “Everything was very fast and straightforward… it was just perfect,” enthuses Juan Pedro.

The experience proved so successful for Juan Pedro that he’s heading back to the mountains again this year. “I’m going back to the same hotel in Austria in December 2011,” he beams.

His advice for others considering a move abroad? “It’s a fantastic experience and everyone should do it once in their life. After I came back, my family asked: ‘How was it?’ And I said what I’d say to anyone: ‘try it yourself’,” he concludes.
