Calling all wannabe entrepreneurs! Ever fancied starting your own business? Already got a good idea but need advice on how to get it up and running? What about shadowing an entrepreneur who has already done what you want to do? If you’re interested, then the Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs programme could be for you.

Funded by the European Commission, Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs was set up in 2008 as a way to promote entrepreneurship and competitiveness, encourage new start ups and help established small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the EU. But what does that mean in practice?

About the programme
“The idea of this programme,” explains Nadine Bettens, responsible for the programme for the Brussels Capital Region at the Brussels Enterprise Agency, “is really for the new entrepreneurs to learn from those with the experience.”

The programme offers budding entrepreneurs the possibility to work, for a period of between one and six months, alongside the owner of an SME in another EU Member State. New entrepreneurs gain relevant management experience such as effective planning, financial and operational management, product development, sales and marketing. “During this time they also get to understand the market of that country and build up a network of contacts, which is essential to get a business up and running,” Nadine adds.

Established entrepreneurs who host the participants also benefit from fresh ideas, complementary skills and can even learn about new markets too. So it’s a win-win experience.

Maybe today’s budding entrepreneurs could be tomorrow’s recruiters on EURES. For participants of the Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs programme, “EURES is a supplementary asset,” says Nadine.

Criteria for participating
“To participate in the programme as a new entrepreneur you just have to be a young entrepreneur. ‘Young’ in the sense that you have a fledging enterprise of less than three years or have a well thought out idea of what enterprise you want to start, together with a business plan. There is no age restriction,” explains Nadine.

Available financial support
Living abroad for a few months doesn’t come cheap, which is why the European Commission offers aspiring entrepreneurs a grant to cover transport and accommodation costs. The amount ranges between EUR 560 and 1 000 per month, depending on the country where the SME is located.
